Chapter One

Where I Come From

Lim Ah Hock was born in 1952 in his grandmother's attap house in a kampung near Changi. Eleven of them lived under one roof, with chickens running under the floorboards.

His father repaired bicycles under the rambutan tree, and Ah Hock still remembers the smell of grease on his hands as he was lifted onto his shoulders.
